5 Things…Your trainer would probably love to tell you!

Ready for a little peek behind the curtain?  Here are five honest conversations I’d love to have as a personal trainer!  If you’re not working with a trainer, you might want to see if any of these apply to your own workouts and healthy lifestyle.

After a while I do usually get to have these talks with my clients.  They’re touchy subjects, but if we could just break the ice on them on day one you’d get your results sooooooo much sooner!!

1. You want change…so things you do are going to have to change.

It’s a tough one, but you’ve come to work with me because you want to make a change.  I will be there to help you through this change, to answer questions and give advice as you go along, to listen to the hard days and the good days, and to keep you moving in the right direction, but you won’t get any changes unless you are willing to change.  Change isn’t easy, but it’s worth it.

2. Nutrition REALLY DOES matter.

A personal trainer isn’t a magician.  I know a few card tricks, but those won’t help you shed pounds and inches quickly. I promise that I will work you out as hard as I can for your current level of fitness every single time I see you, but what you put in your body matters just as much as what I help you do to it.  The food you eat is how you show your body love from the inside out – so how are you nourishing yourself?

 3. I’m already asking the bare minimum of you outside of the studio.

If I give you a “homework” assignment or a meal plan, know that I’m starting you off a the most basic level possible that will still get you results.  I’m not giving you something difficult and expecting you to modify it to suit your lifestyle – I’m giving you something that I’ve already designed with your lifestyle in mind.  If I say 100 grams of protein and you eat 55 and call it good enough…I’m not going to agree with you!  If I say three times a week and you do it once, I’ll agree it’s better than nothing but I won’t agree that it’s enough to get you the results you want.

4. We will do as many sets or reps as necessary to get you the results you want.

I’m not punishing you or trying to injure you, but if I don’t push you then I’m not doing my job.  I listen carefully to the results that you describe and I take you in that direction as quickly as humanly possible.  Some days that means very hard work, but I promise it will be worth it.  You can whine, but remind yourself in the end that it’s what you came to do!

5. I really do care and worry about you.

I think about you guys all the time!  I’m always researching new workouts and moves to keep you in top shape, trying out diets and programs that you ask me about, and striving to keep Tiny Fitness at the top of its game 365 days a year.  When I ask how you’re doing or how you’re feeling, I really mean it – I want you to feel better inside and out every day.  When I give you a gentle (or not-so-gentle) nudge about sticking to your program, it’s because I want you to reach your goals and not get frustrated…in short, it’s because I really do care about your health and well-being.  Fitness isn’t about gym time for me, it’s about how you feel 24 hours a day. Even if I haven’t worked out with you in over a year, you and your progress are still on my mind!

I know, there are some things you’d love to tell me, too…you don’t really love burpees, some days it’s all you can do to get dressed and drag yourself to the studio, you are tired of chicken and vegetables….and you can tell me those things!  Because (see #5), I do care 🙂  And (#4), they won’t lead to extra burpees.  Promise.
